Ex-Multicoin Co-Founder Kyle Samani Accuses Firm Of Sabotaging Solana Builders Over CFTC Prediction Market Filing

The Solana ecosystem is facing an unusual public rift, this time from within the ranks of its most vocal early backers.

Kyle Samani, the former managing partner and co-founder of Multicoin Capital, took to social media this week to accuse his old firm of actively working against Solana builders. The statement, which quickly circulated across crypto Twitter, followed a joint regulatory filing by Multicoin and the Hyperliquid Policy Center endorsing the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as the sole federal regulator for exchange-traded prediction markets. In the original report, Samani framed the filing as a direct attack on the permissionless ethos that Solana developers have spent years cultivating.

Samani stepped back from Multicoin’s management in February 2026 but has remained a prominent figure in the Solana community. His break with the firm is not a quiet departure; it’s a loud condemnation of what he sees as a betrayal of the network’s core principles. For a venture firm that poured substantial capital into Solana-based projects, the accusation carries weight. It raises uncomfortable questions about where venture capital’s loyalty lies—with the builders they fund or with the regulatory frameworks that offer clearer paths to institutional growth.

The Prediction Market Filing and CFTC Alignment

The filing itself is a nuanced piece of regulatory positioning. Multicoin and the Hyperliquid Policy Center called on the CFTC to assert clear authority over exchange-traded prediction markets, a rapidly growing vertical that blends DeFi infrastructure, consumer-facing apps, and politically sensitive contract design. They argued for greater transparency in contract approvals and clearer rules, framing the CFTC as the appropriate overseer to prevent a patchwork of state-level or SEC interventions.

But in Samani’s view, that position is fundamentally at odds with what Solana builders are trying to achieve. Prediction markets on Solana have thrived on the promise of open, censorship-resistant settlement layers. Endorsing a single federal gatekeeper—even a relatively tech-forward one like the CFTC—signals a willingness to trade the permissionless ideal for regulatory clarity. That trade-off might make sense for a venture fund managing institutional LP capital. It makes far less sense to a network builder who sees composable, unlicensed financial primitives as the whole point.

What It Means for Solana Builders

The rift exposes a larger tension inside crypto venture capital that’s been simmering for years. As the regulatory environment in the U.S. inches toward formalization, funds with significant portfolio exposure must decide whether to push for rules that protect existing investments or to defend the broader permissionless culture that made those investments possible in the first place. Samani’s public rebuke suggests that Multicoin has chosen the former, and he isn’t willing to stay quiet about it.

For builders on Solana, the message is blunt: the capital that helped bootstrap the ecosystem may now be funding the regulatory narrative that constrains its most experimental edges. It’s not an unprecedented dynamic. Ethereum weathered similar fractures when early VC-backed layer-2 rollup architectures prompted debates about centralizing sequencers and value extraction. But the Solana community has historically prided itself on a unified front, forged through the network’s rapid recovery from outages and its focus on high-throughput, low-latency execution. Samani’s outburst fractures that narrative, and it will force founders to clarify where they stand.

Uncertainty Ahead

What’s less clear is whether this disagreement will materially affect Multicoin’s portfolio or its access to future Solana deals. The firm remains one of the most active investors in the space, and its capital is not easily replaced. But the optics of a co‑founder publicly calling out the fund’s regulatory strategy may give some founders pause. Samani is not a peripheral figure. His reputation inside the Solana ecosystem gives his words real bite, even if he holds no formal position at Multicoin anymore.

The CFTC filing also arrives at a moment when prediction markets are under fresh scrutiny. Kalshi and Polymarket have drawn attention from lawmakers, and the SEC has signaled its own interest in policing event contracts. A consensus around CFTC primacy would likely accelerate institutional involvement in prediction markets, but it could also push smaller, more experimental projects into a compliance gray zone. Solana builders who prize the network’s speed and low fees may find themselves caught between a regulatory reality and a cultural commitment to ungoverned markets.

Adding to the broader context, the Solana ecosystem has recently maintained strong developer activity, ranking alongside Ethereum, BNB Chain, and Polygon in this week’s developer activity rankings. That momentum gives builders leverage, but it also makes them a more visible target for regulators. Meanwhile, the fight over prediction market oversight is playing out against a backdrop of intense lobbying over a landmark crypto bill that could reshape U.S. market structure, with the banking industry already attempting to derail the legislation just days before a Senate vote—a reminder that regulatory battles are not abstract contests but immediate coalition fights.

Samani’s decision to go public also suggests he may be positioning himself for a more active role in shaping the Solana ecosystem’s response. Whether that means launching a new venture initiative, funding open-source infrastructure, or simply rallying builders around a harder stance on regulatory independence, his next move will be closely watched. For now, the Solana community is left to parse a conflict that pits one of its most trusted early voices against the institution he helped build.
