Long-Term Bitcoin Holders Return as Weak U.S. Demand Raises Selling Pressure

  • Bitcoin held by long-term investors has begun moving to exchanges after years of dormancy.
  • CryptoQuant data shows a sharp increase in Coinbase inflows from 3- to 7-year-old coins.
  • At the same time, the Coinbase Premium Index remains weak, pointing to subdued U.S. spot demand.
  • The combination suggests returning supply may be harder for the market to absorb.

The latest data from CryptoQuant shows a sharp rise in older Bitcoin entering Coinbase just as the Coinbase Premium Index remains subdued, indicating that one of the market’s largest pools of potential selling pressure is returning while one of its key sources of buying demand appears to be weakening.

Dormant Bitcoin Supply Reappears

Long-term Bitcoin holders have begun moving coins that had remained inactive for years, according to on-chain data from CryptoQuant, signaling a pickup in activity among some of the market’s oldest investor cohorts.

Key developments include:

  • 3-5 – year-old coins: Coinbase inflows increased 595%.
  • 5-7-year – old coins: Inflows surged 1,016%, marking the sharpest rise among tracked age bands.
  • Large individual transfer: CryptoQuant analyst Maartunn identified 3,848 BTC (approximately $242.5 million) moving in a single block from long-term holders.

The data indicates that previously dormant supply is becoming more active, although transfers to exchanges do not necessarily imply immediate selling. Historically, however, movements from long-term holder cohorts tend to draw attention because they can increase available market supply and influence short-term liquidity, particularly when accompanied by weakening spot demand.

CryptoQuant's Bitcoin: Spent Output Age Bands chart showing Bitcoin trading near $63,000 alongside spent output activity across different coin age cohorts. A sharp spike in older coins—particularly the 6–12 month cohort—appears at the end of the chart, indicating a significant increase in dormant Bitcoin being spent.

Coinbase Demand Remains Soft

The increase in exchange inflows has coincided with weak signals from one of Bitcoin’s most closely watched demand indicators.

The Coinbase Premium Index, which measures the price difference between Coinbase and major offshore exchanges, has remained negative or close to neutral in recent sessions. That generally suggests U.S.-based buyers – including institutions and larger spot investors – are not bidding aggressively enough to create a sustained premium.

CryptoQuant’s exchange flow data points to the same imbalance: more long-term supply is arriving at Coinbase while buying interest has yet to strengthen meaningfully.

Supply Is Rising as Technical Momentum Weakens

The on-chain picture is also reflected in Bitcoin’s technical structure.

On the daily chart, Bitcoin is trading around $63,300, below both its 20-day and 50-day moving averages, while remaining well above the longer-term 100-day and 200-day trend lines.

Daily BTC/USD chart on Coinbase showing Bitcoin trading around $63,290 after rebounding from intraday lows near $62,744. Price remains below the 20-day SMA ($64,424) but slightly above the 50-day SMA ($63,340), while the 100-day ($68,751) and 200-day ($71,125) moving averages remain overhead. The RSI sits at 46.63, indicating neutral-to-slightly bearish momentum despite a modest daily recovery.

Momentum indicators also remain mixed. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has recovered modestly to around 47 after approaching oversold territory but remains below its signal average, suggesting bullish momentum has yet to re-establish itself.

Taken together, the chart reflects a market attempting to stabilize after recent weakness rather than one already entering a renewed uptrend.

Why the Combination Matters

Neither dormant coin movements nor a weak Coinbase Premium necessarily determine Bitcoin’s next directional move on their own.

However, the two indicators become more meaningful when they appear simultaneously.

Long-term holders represent a significant source of potential supply, while Coinbase has historically served as one of the primary venues for U.S. institutional buying. If older coins continue moving onto exchanges without a corresponding recovery in spot demand, the market could become more vulnerable to periods of higher volatility and localized selling pressure.

The relationship also highlights an important distinction: on-chain supply can increase quickly, but demand often returns more gradually. Whether Bitcoin absorbs this wave of older coins without significant price disruption will likely depend on whether institutional buyers re-enter the market in the coming weeks rather than on exchange inflows alone.
